As a music and culture journalist, I was drawn to Vienna many years ago by the fact that the music, theater, and art scenes are so highly valued here. The special thing is that the city is so very modern, yet nonetheless lives at such a gentle pace. There is an exciting mix of pulsating urban lifestyle and a leisurely, easygoing way of life. I’m often out in the countryside for work, so I rent out my apartment now and then.
My 40-square-meter apartment is a little island of modernity in a historic building directly within Vienna’s inner city district. Located on Naglergasse, a car-free zone that intersects the magnificent Am Graben pedestrian area, this is the ideal spot to start exploring the city, from its large shopping streets to little crooked alleyways. The flat’s décor is tastefully designed and filled with my greatest passion: vinyl records. A grand view of the Naglergasse is included!

I am a music and design fan with a passion for vinyl. In my leisure time, records are my main focus, and many of them are in the apartment. I especially love soul, funk, and Latin from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Despite this penchant for bygone eras, I still consider myself an “early adopter” of technology and multimedia and enjoy keeping up with the spirit of the times. Guests in my apartment are welcome to have fun using these gadgets!
I like the modern atmosphere of this café located in the historic winter riding hall of the Museum Quarter. I especially recommend one of their cheeseburgers – the best in the city – followed by a piece of specialty cheesecake, which tastes just like the one from my favorite bakery in Little Italy, New York.
ww2.diehalle.atFrom funk to soul to heavy metal to pop – when I think of how much money I have exchanged here for vinyl over the years!
www.audiocenter.atTongues is the store of my dreams: organic food & organic music. An organic deli and record store all in one. As good as it gets.
www.tongues.atThis café was frozen in time sometime during the 1970s. A fantastic little journey through time.
The Phil is the perfect hangout for audio-, biblio-, and cinemaphiles. They also serve an exceptionally excellent espresso and other Viennese coffee specialties in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.
phil.infoTeuchtler has been the top address for vinyl addicts for over 60 years. Sometimes I dig through their bins all day long, and the service by the manager himself is still the absolute best.
www.teuchtler.atSelf-explanatory really. Check out their changing themes, since their fantastically curated movie picks let audiences continue to discover new and old pearls of the film world.
www.filmmuseum.atThe Loos Bar is an institution. Designed by celebrated Jugendstil architect Adolf Loos, it is not only a pleasure for the eyes, it also attracts a fabulous mix of guests. Every night is an experience in itself, and the long drinks are mixed as perfectly as a record set by my favorite DJ.
www.loosbar.atA jazz and music club with an unbelievable varied musical program, this is where I most like to see and hear Austrian musicians, many of whom are still undiscovered secrets. If you like quality underground music in a good atmosphere, then this is the place for you. The Porgy is the most important (and almost the only) jazz club in town, and more than lives up to its reputation.
www.porgy.atThis place is great for hanging out and having a good time for hours on end. There is a large smoking section and you can something to eat almost the whole night through. And during the day too, of course. My favorite café and restaurant.
